Antique Watchmakers Lathe & Accessories
1880'a Lathe turns by Lucien Hugoniot-Tissot,
France
Antique Watchmakers Lathe & Accessories
From the estate of a watchmaker  an interesting box containing an antique “steel turns” lathe with accessories and various related
watchmaker tools.
The lathe boasts the trademark of Lucien Hugoniot-Tissot who manufactured a variety of watchmaker’s tools from Montecheroux in the
Franche-Comte region of eastern France.  The lathe is also stamped “Brevete” and S.C.D.G, which indicate that a patent had been
applied for. Some of Msr. Hugoniot-Tissot watchmaker’s tools are on display in the British Museum.
This is a classic “fiddle bow driven” dead center lathe that was the earliest form of lathe used by the watchmaking fraternity. This lathe
comes as pictured with a bed, “headstock”, tailstock and tool rest. The accessories that originally belong with the lathe include 10
runners with specialty ends, 5 split pulleys (ferrules), 1 fixed pulley, a file rest and three tiny drilling type parts. All parts of the lathe
move freely and stocks align perfectly. As expected the lathe and accessories show signs of use with rubs to the plating and stains,
but no rust or damage that would stop the lathe from being put to work on your bench.
Included in the box of wonders we also found a caliper gauge, collet with pulley, drill and pivot holding pliers. These are all in good
usable condition and come as part of the lot.

Antique Profession Print-TURNER-LATHE-Luyken-1694 for sale 47doll
Description: This scarse original old antique print / plate originates from: 'Spiegel
van het Menselyk Bedryf' (Mirror of Human Activities.) or 'Iets voor Allen.' (Something
for everyone.). See subject description for exact source. In 1694 the Amsterdam
artists Jan and Casper Luyken published their celebrated work 'Spiegel van het
Menselyk Bedryf.', a collection of one hundred fine engravings depicting the arts and
crafts. Each print is depicting a particular occupation, with the name of the
profession, one or two explanatory lines above the plate and followed by a six-line
poem below. The book was an instant success and was reprinted many times up to
1767. Other printers and booksellers tried to gain profit from the popular best seller
as well. The first of many pirated editions appeared as soon as 1695. As such the
work by Abraham de St. Clara who published: 'Etwas fur Alle ...' or 'Iets voor Allen'
(Something for everyone.) in several editions from 1699 on in both German and
Dutch, is best known. This work had 200 engravings, including many, mostly in
reverse, after the Luyken prints mentioned above. We carry many of these prints as
well. Please inquire if you are looking for a particular profession, but cannot find it.

Artists and Engravers: Jan Luyken (1649-1712) belonged to the best engravers of the
period. His son Casper (1672-1708) assisted with the making of the prints. Abraham
a Sancta Clara (1644 - 1709) was an Austrian Augustinian Monk. His lay name was
Johann Ulrich Megerle. He was friar, preacher, and author of popular books of
devotion, known for his great eloquence.
Subject: Plate: 'De Draajer.' (The Turner.) From a 1704 edition of 'Spiegel van het
Menselyk Bedryf'.
Condition: Fine. General age related toning.
Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 3.9 x 6.1 inch. The image size is ca. 3 x 3.3 inch.
Medium: Engraving and etching combination on a verge type hand laid paper.
