Brown & Sharp Automatic Screw Machine

This is a Brown & Sharp Single spindle automatic screw machine.  Made 1946.

Inscribed: Brown & Sharpe MFG. CO. Providence, R.I. NO.4 Patented July 1, 1915.  April 15, 1916, 296 (cast in base)

Typical single spindle automatic screw machine, set up for motor operation using a 7.5 h.p. Deihl induction motor, 3 phase 60hz @ 10 Amps motor speed
1160 rpm.  This type of machine is cam controlled and designed to make enormous quantities of small turned parts that are nearly identical.  Brown &
Sharpe were the leading manufacturers of single spindle automatics in the U.S. from about 1900 to 1975.

This machine was in good working condition when we acquired it many years ago and could be made workable although we never used it here in Greenfield
Village because it was not the right time period for our shop.  It weighs in the thousands of pounds range.  The buyer would need a flatbed truck to pick it up.
We can fork lift it onto a truck that you provide.  We are also including a book Construction and Use of Automatic Screw Machines publised by Brown and
Sharpe in 1951.  It is slightly later than the machine but it was updated from 1938, so it is applicable to the machine we are selling.

Analysis of the collections of The Henry Ford (which includes Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, The Benson Ford Research Center and the Ford
Rouge Factory Tour) is an ongoing and necessary process.  Items recommended for disposal undergo an extensive review process before being presented to
the Board of Trustees who must approve all deaccessions.  Funds acquired from the disposal of deaccessioned collection materials are used to directly
advance the development and care of the museum's historical collections.  Deaccessioned collection objects may not be purchased by or for any paid or
unpaid staff member or Board of Trustees.

This is a
Antique metal lathe manufactured by H L Shepard. Name cast in frame reads H L
Shepard. CIN, O. From research this lathe dates from around 1860 - 1890. The lathe was once owned by my
great grandfather passed thru generations to me. It has been inside all its life. The lathe has surface rust and
some dirt. However all part are free and move (stiff). It does have a complete set of change gears still with it.
All part and pieces look to be in good shape except for one gear on the end of a spindel. (see pic:s) This
lathe appears to have been driven by a pulley and belt system.
